Wonders Illustrated

The imaginations of children and young adults are shaped by the stories and worlds that writers and illustrators invent through words and images in book form. Wonders Illustrated is a sampling of the diverse, creative output of 11 established and emerging illustrators whose visual storytelling inspires laughter, emotion and pondering.
Deb Hoeffner
Based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. “Working in oils, graphite, and a pastel and watercolor mix, Deb specializes in expressive portraits. Her sensitive drawings have been featured in the North Light book series “Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing” and in “Art Journey Animals”, a best of animal artwork compendium. Her “Homeless Christ” has appeared in books, magazines, churches, homeless shelters and more, reaching from Key West to Australia. Deb has illustrated four award-winning children’s books, “All You Want And Then Some”, “Lucky: The Tale of a Tree”, “A Friend On The Porch” and “Forever Home: Tales of Four Lucky Dogs”. An illustration created for her children’s book “Silent Swoop: An Owl, an Egg, and a Warm Pocket”, is now in the collection of the Mazza Museum of Picture Book Art.
James Yang
“James Yang was born in Oklahoma and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Communication Arts and Design. Within a few years of entering illustration, his work appeared in prestigious trade publications such as Communication Arts, 3×3 Magazine, Graphis, Print, and The Art Directors Club of New York. James has won over 250 awards for design and illustration including best of show from 3×3 Magazine. He has taught and lectured at a variety of institutions including SVA, Parsons, FIT, SCAD and was an executive board member for ICON, a biennial illustration conference. His book, Bus! Stop! was selected as an outstanding picture book by The New York Times and the follow up Stop! Bot! is the 2020 Geisel award winner for the most distinguished American book for beginning readers. His newest book, A Boy Named Isamu as been called by Kirkus review “A marvel of prose, illustration and design” and is the 2022 APALA-American Library Association Honor picture book for Asian American Literature. His subway wallpaper can be seen on trains in the Metropolitan Transit system. James currently lives in Brooklyn where he happily works for a variety of clients and books.“
Charles Beyl
“Life has taken me from studying Fine Art and Graphic Design at Washington State University; to being a designer, illustrator and art director in Alexandria, VA; to being an illustrator and educator (with a wonderful stop at Syracuse University for grad school) in Lancaster, PA. I currently live in Sugar Land, Texas and write children’s books and continue to create humorous illustrations while keeping an eye out for snakes and alligators. When I am not in my studio you can find me teaching at the University of Houston in their Digital Media Department.
For twenty years my editorial cartoons appeared in Lancaster Newspaper's Sunday News, Lancaster, PA.
From 1995 to 2015 I worked with an amazing group of students and faculty as an Associate Professor at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster, PA. ”
David Curtis
“David Curtis is an Award-Winning Illustrator and Book Designer currently living in Brooklyn, NY. Growing up on the Jersey Shore, he was drawn to Surfing and Skateboard art at an early age, and carries that esthetic into his work with the use of bright colors and psychedelic abstract forms.
Concurrently, he is working HarperCollins Children’s Books, where he designs and art directs book covers for Young Adult and Middle Grade readers.
David’s clients and collaborators include Paramount Pictures, NASA, Wizards of the Coast, Legendary Comics, Penguin Random House, Scholastic, Tor Books, Picador, Flatiron Books, Amazon, Macmillan, Discover Magazine, PC World, Science News, among others.
He has also exhibited art in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto as well as appearing on the Spine Magazine Podcast and The Imaginaries Podcast.”
Alina Chau
“Alina Chau 周曉芬 is an award-winning filmmaker and artist. Her credits include the Emmy Award-winning Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, and numerous best-selling games. She illustrated The Nian Monster, which received the 2018 APALA Picture Book Honor. Having grown up in Hong Kong in an Indonesian-Chinese family during the British colonial era, her creative vision is strongly influenced by a diverse mix of cultures. She finds inspiration in her grandmother's stories, colorful sarongs, and delicate wooden sculptures from Southeast Asia, as well as in the aroma of stinky tofu, and the sound of Hong Kong tram bells chiming. Alina's unique cultural heritage strongly influences her artistic and storytelling voice. Her whimsical illustration style is highly sought after for art exhibitions worldwide. Her lyrical watercolors have garnered her a devoted fan base and the accolades of her peers.”
Floyd Cooper
(January 8, 1956 – July 15, 2021) has been honored with 4 Coretta Scott King Honors, 10 ALA Notables, and many more for his illustrations by the Coretta Scott King Award. Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he received a degree in fine arts from the University of Oklahoma. Floyd began his career while still a student at the University of Oklahoma. After which he worked in advertising, then took a job working at Hallmark greeting cards in Kansas City. In 1984, he headed for the east coast and snagged a literary agent, illustrated his first book, Grandpa’s Face, and the rest is history. In 1984 Cooper moved to New York City to pursue a career as an illustrator of books, and he now lives in Easton, Pennsylvania, with his family.
Andie Munroe
Based in Los Angeles, Andie graduated from Otis College of Art and Design in 2020 and immediately started working in the Toy Design industry. She has worked with Pokemon and currently with Little Tikes. For “Wonders Illustrated,” Andie presented Plush line art and 3D printed prototypes for her book “Oliver and Charlie.”
Sophie McTear
“I’m a nonbinary illustrator and graphic designer living in Tucson, Arizona. I make art inspired by the desert, my LGBTQ+ experience, and honest and vulnerable self-expression.
I work with a broad range of clients and projects, big and small. In my years of experience I’ve had the pleasure of working in editorial, advertising, packaging, merchandise, printmaking, and more! Though I am open to all types of projects I have a special interests in queer issues, portraits, lifestyle, music, craft beer, and witchy things.”
Duncan Tonatiuh
“Duncan Tonatiuh is an award-winning author-illustrator. He is both Mexican and American. He grew up in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and graduated from Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College in New York City. His artwork is inspired by Pre-Columbian art, particularly that of the Mixtec codices. His aim is to create images and stories that honor the past, but that are relevant to people, specially children, nowadays.”
Honie Beam
Honie Beam is an award winning book, comic, motion designer and advertisement ilIustrator based in South Carolina. Beam received her undergraduate degrees from the College of the Canyons in 2019 in Humanities and from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2022 in Illustration and Sequential Art. Her awards include; World Illustration Awards, Short and Longlisted Artist, 2021 & 2022, College of the Canyons Valedictorian , 2019, and the President’s Award for Educational Excellence, 2019.
Penny Dasi
“I graduated in 2021 with a degree Communications Design with a focus on Illustration at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY which I was awarded with High Honors. Originally from the UK, I moved to America and am now working hard, doing what I love, which has always been drawing and illustrating. The ComD program has also allowed me to do projects in film, graphic design, branding, and many more things that will help me communicate my ideas using design.”
